Enough voters in enough House districts around the country chose enough Democrats to give them the majority after eight years of the chamber being led by Republicans. And now we’re about to find out why that was a monumental mistake.
In political terms, it may be a blessing if you’re a conservative supporter of POTUS Donald Trump and the GOP. That’s because it looks like House Minority Leader Nancy “Stammering, Stuttering” Pelosi, nearly an octogenarian, is about to become Speaker again, much to the chagrin of younger Democrats who are ready to retire and replace the “Old Guard” with someone much more in tune with Karl Marx and Che Guevara.
And she will defend Old Guard Democratic “accomplishments” like Obamacare, which continues to wreak havoc throughout the healthcare industry.
During a victory speech Tuesday night after it became clear that Democrats would win back the House not with a “blue wave” but more of a blue swell, Pelosi signaled her support for that miserable piece of legislation as she went through a healthcare talking point by exclaiming at one point, “Let’s hear it for more pre-existing conditions!”
Beyond celebrating that fact that many Americans suffer from chronic disease, it was an odd thing to say for other reasons that more Republicans should have concentrated on during the campaign season prior to the midterms but didn’t: Democrats, not the GOP, ‘broke’ healthcare.
In fact, most Republicans were trying to un-break it but could not do so because there were too many RINOs at the time who were still butt-hurt over the fact that Donald Trump bested their best “establishment” candidates for president. And of course, repealing and replacing Obamacare was not supported by a single Democrat. (Related: Obamacare premiums set to explode again next year; Democrats who passed it now blame Republicans.)
Republicans did eventually get one thing right when it came to Obamacare: They supported POTUS Trump’s tax reform legislation which included a repeal of the individual mandate contained in the law. That was the provision that forced Americans to purchase a product — in this case health insurance — for the first time in our history.
The repeal was good because healthcare premiums had become so expensive, thanks to Obamacare mandates since it was passed in 2010, that millions of American families simply could not afford rates that rose by four and five digits over the course of a year’s time. And that didn’t include astronomical deductibles that made it so millions of others essentially had no health insurance at all — unless they were hit by a bus or something.
As for Pelosi’s cheering of pre-existing conditions, Republicans were not campaigning on repealing that part of Obamacare. When they mentioned healthcare, many said that it was still broken and that to fix it, the remnants of the “Affordable” Care Act had to be repealed and replaced with free-market ideas that re-empowered health insurers, healthcare providers, and patients over big, fat, inefficient government.
The biggest problem with forcing insurers to cover preexisting conditions is that it is expensive. It’s rather like requiring home insurers to sell policies to people after their houses burn down. The idea is to create a system that encourages people to be proactive in taking care of their homes so as to not require massive insurance payouts.
The same is true of healthcare. The system ought to be structured so that those with preexisting conditions can still get the coverage they need, while those without any health problems are free to explore the many “non-traditional” ways to stay healthy without being penalized by a government-centric system.
Democrats don’t see it that way. They’d prefer all healthcare decisions were made by government bureaucrats, without incentivizing citizens to be free to make their own choices.
As Speaker of a Democratic House majority, Nancy Pelosi will keep cheering preexisting conditions while working to preserve a bad healthcare system she helped install. That is good news for conservatives because that position will help return her and her party to the minority in 2020.
