Amid revelations that Google engineers have engaged in flagrant censorship by downgrading search results and placing ‘controversial’ terms like “abortion” on blacklists so pro-life content is hidden comes a new report that some employees are ‘triggered’ by traditional American values like “family.”
Or, at least, the word ‘family.’
As reported by The Daily Caller, an executive with the company sparked a major backlash from employees when the word was used in a weekly company-wide presentation, internal documents the news site obtained indicate.
Apparently, several employees were angered by the term because it was used in relation to a product aimed at children — because the implication was that only families have children, according to the documents. The backlash became serious enough and large enough that a Google vice president was forced to address the ‘controversy’ by asking for feedback about how Google could be more…inclusive.
“Please help us get to a better state. Teach us how to talk about it in [an] inclusive way, if you feel like we are not doing it well. As a team we have [a] very inclusive culture, and want to do right in this area. I am adding my team here so we can have [an] open conversation,” Google vice president Pavni Diwanji noted.
Citing the reviewed documents, The DC noted further:
One employee stormed out of the March 2017 presentation after a presenter “continued to show (awesome) Unicorn product features which continually use the word ‘family’ as a synonym for ‘household with children,’” he explained in an internal thread. That employee posted an extended rant, which was well-received by his colleagues, on why linking families to children is “offensive, inappropriate, homophobic, and wrong.”
But becoming unhinged and demonstrating you don’t have any capacity for understanding and compromise is, apparently, non-offensive, appropriate, inclusive, and right (remember when blowing up at a senior executive would cost you your job?).
The offended employee noted: “This is a diminishing and disrespectful way to speak. If you mean ‘children’, say ‘children’; we have a perfectly good word for it. ‘Family friendly’ used as a synonym for ‘kid friendly’ means to me, ‘you and yours don’t count as family unless you have children.’ And while kids may be less aware of it, there are kids without families too, you know.”
Groan. Even in one of the most liberal, Left-wing companies on the planet, it’s never liberal and Left-wing enough. (Related: Deep dive into tone deaf Gillette razor ad that stereotypes male masculinity finds it is directed by Kim Gehrig — who hates men.)
As if this employee’s inability to adapt, overcome, and get over himself/herself weren’t bad enough, about 100 other Google employees upvoted the post, which is the electronic equivalent of being a clapping seal. “Thanks for writing this. So much yes,” one of them responded.
“My family consists of me and several other trans feminine folks, some of whom I’m dating. We’re all supportive of each other and eventually aspire to live together. Just because we aren’t a heterosexual couple with 2.5 kids, a white picket fence, and a dog doesn’t mean we’re not a family,” wrote another.
Well, right. But that also doesn’t mean that couples who do have the kids and the picket fence aren’t versions of a family either, and for that matter, by far the ‘normal’ vision of a family that most people get when they hear the word.
The Google presenter who used the word “family” isn’t the problem here. The problem lies with those special little snowflakes who walk around just waiting for something to offend them, when the reality is, being offended is a 100-percent preventable thing.
One day in the not-too-distant future our country will face a legitimate crisis that we will all have to deal with. Those who are most offended by the least offensive things aren’t going to make it.
