In November 2018, Katie Hill become the first Democrat to win an Orange County, Calif., congressional district in 26 years. A little less than a year later, she’s resigning in disgrace.
A rising star in her party, Hill, who was openly bisexual, was the No. 2 Democrat on the House Oversight Committee and had been made the co-chair of the Congressional LGBT Equality Caucus.
But last week the conservative blog Red State reported allegations that she was having a sexual affair with a female campaign staffer, a report that was complete with screenshots of revealing text messages and a nude photo, which allegedly also included her husband.
According to USAFeatures News, it’s a scandal that has cost Hill her congressional seat:
Freshman Rep. Katie Hill (D-Calif.), said over the weekend she would be resigning from Congress in lieu of a scandal and an ethics investigation into allegations of a sexual relationship with a congressional aide.
“It is with a broken heart that today I announce my resignation from Congress,” Hill said in a statement. “This is the hardest thing I have ever had to do, but I believe it is the best thing for my constituents, my community and our country.”
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a fellow Democrat constituent from California, told Politico that Hill informed her she made “errors in judgement that made her continued service as a member untenable.”
Hill, who is expected to resign by the end of the week, was already under an investigation by the House Ethics Committee, according to reports, but that could be nonsense too, given that Democrats don’t ever hold their members responsible for anything, and they are in control of the House.
That said, after another report from The Daily Mail, which included another nude photo of Hill and other images, it was obvious that even Democrats and their allies in the “mainstream” media couldn’t cover for Hill.
She says she had a sexual relationship with a campaign staffer but not with her legislative director, Graham Kelly, as some allegations claimed.
Hill went on to blame an “abusive marriage” — convenient, of course — and other factors for her behavior.
“During the final tumultuous years of my abusive marriage, I became involved in a relationship with someone on my campaign,” Hill said in a letter to her constituents last week. “I know that even a consensual relationship with a subordinate is inappropriate, but I still allowed it to happen despite my better judgment. For that I apologize.”
She also said she was victimized by a “smear campaign” by Heslep, claiming also that he is attempting to “humiliate” her. But the photos of her naked combing a female staffer’s hair and toking from a bong are all her; she’s just angry that they came out. “This is what needs to happen so that the good people who supported me will no longer be subjected to the pain inflicted by my abusive husband and the brutality of hateful political operatives who seem to happily provide a platform to a monster who is driving a smear campaign built around cyber exploitation,” she complained.
“Having private photos of personal moments weaponized against me has been an appalling invasion of my privacy,” she wrote. “It’s also illegal, and we are currently pursuing all of our available legal options. However, I know that as long as I am in Congress, we’ll live fearful of what might come next and how much it will hurt.”
Like we said, we’re surprised that Democrats would allow one of their own to be ‘sacrificed’ like this, especially after she won a district that had long been in Republican hands. But some things are simply too creepy and bizarre even for them to defend.
